The Lead Distribution Decision
One of the most important business decisions you'll make is whether to sell exclusive or shared leads. This choice affects your pricing, operations, buyer retention, and ultimately your profitability.
Exclusive Leads
Definition: Sold to ONE buyer only. That buyer gets the lead within minutes, and no competitor ever sees it.
Pros:
- Higher pricing ($150-500 per lead depending on vertical)
- Better buyer retention (they know they have a competitive advantage)
- Faster close rates for buyers (no competition)
- Cleaner relationships (one point of contact, clear expectations)
Cons:
- Requires more lead volume (one buyer can only absorb so many leads)
- Higher risk if a buyer churns (you lose 100% of that lead's value)
- More complex operations (need multiple buyers per market)
Shared Leads
Definition: Sold to 2-3 buyers simultaneously. First to contact wins the business.
Pros:
- Higher revenue per lead (sold 2-3x)
- Easier to fulfill (one buyer can absorb all volume)
- Lower risk (if one buyer churns, others still purchasing)
Cons:
- Lower pricing per buyer ($50-150 per buyer)
- Higher buyer churn (frustrated by competition)
- Lower close rates for buyers (race to contact)
- Reputation risk (buyers hate competing on the same lead)
Our Recommendation
Start with exclusive leads. Yes, it's harder operationally. But you'll build a better business with higher buyer retention, better results, and stronger word-of-mouth. Shared leads are a race to the bottom.
